One of my favorite things to do is to talk about the many good things the students of Ennis ISD achieve. I particularly like to brag about the accomplishments of the students in the career and technical classes.

In fact, during the month of February I showed pictures of the projects our students had built to anyone who would stand still long enough for me to whip out my phone or iPad. We have some very talented students who built some beautiful pieces of furniture and impressive cookers!

As the swirl of activities that define the close of a school year get underway, there will be a few moments for reflection and assessment of the events of this school year. Generally, a defining moment for any given period of time is best recognized in hindsight and that will probably be the case with school year 2012-13.

The rapid proliferation of different ways to communicate makes connection between home and school so much easier than in the past, but at the same time, those varied communication links also present some challenges. Overcoming the challenges requires extra effort from several directions.

Results of a recent research project were released that indicate that some parents are covered up with data — and still don’t have the answers they seek.

One of the most challenging aspects in the area of public education is the ability to differentiate curriculum to meet the needs of a diverse student population.

This challenge is being met by Ennis ISD, with the district adopting a proactive approach in its efforts to incorporate new and innovative ways of instructing our students.

Back in June of 2011, all of the high schools combined in Ellis County graduated a total of 2,105 students. It was a joyful week around the county as proud parents, grandparents, teachers and administrators celebrated this wonderful event of graduating from high school.

Unfortunately, for too many of the students, this marked the end of their academic careers.

Buon giorno, i cittadini di Ennis. That is Italian for, “Good day, Citizens of Ennis.” Spring is upon us, and it is time for another longstanding Ennis tradition, the Bowie Elementary Spaghetti Supper.

For 25 years previous to this year, the parents of Bowie have hosted an annual affair to help support the children and their education. Truth be told, there almost wasn’t a Spaghetti Supper this year; but after some consideration, wise advice prompted the thought, “Don’t mess with tradition!”

We’re on the verge of spring here at Ennis Junior High School. That means students and teachers are preparing for the upcoming round of state testing.

Teachers are developing lessons and composing reviews so students are well prepared to do their very best on the STAAR tests.

When the school year started, our overriding theme out of the gate here at Ennis ISD was concise yet clear: “It’s Showtime!”

At the time, it meant that we were pulling the curtain wide open on a new school year, with all the excitement and anxiety of a Broadway musical on opening night or the gala premiere of a major motion picture.

Coming from a large school district about 22 miles north of here, I was excited about making the move to Ennis at the start of this school year. My personal journey began about two weeks before school started, and I was able to jump right in and work with the other administrators in planning the successful launch of a new school year.

A few weeks ago, EISD experienced what we believe is the first step in a major culture change for our schools. We’ve shared lots of information about Rachel’s Challenge and the intense three days of assembly programs and smaller group training in how to implement some of the suggested activities affiliated with accepting the challenge set forth by Rachel Joy Scott, a young lady who lost her life in the Columbine, Colo., school shooting in 1999.
