At daybreak, people from areas of Ennis unaffected by the storm event overnight woke to a dramatic scene in downtown Ennis.

City Manager Steve Howerton has confirmed reports that a tornado tore through the heart of downtown shortly after midnight, damaging a number of buildings and injuring one person.

First responders from throughout the county flooded into the city, closing off the most damaged portion of West Ennis Avenue from Clay Street to Interstate 45.

Traffic resumed east of downtown before daybreak.

The American Red Cross has set up an incident response location in downtown at Brown and Dallas streets.

Howerton said damages will likely climb into the tens of millions of dollars once thoroughly assessed.

“We’re going to do an aerial assessment later this morning,” he said.

Mayor Russell Thomas issued a disaster declaration shortly after 3 a.m. that has been sent to Gov. Rick Perry’s office.

“It’s a pretty rough one,” Thomas said as traffic began crawling around downtown. “Property is one thing, though, human life is another — that’s the truth.”

An Ennis man remains in jail as of today after a Sunday night argument ended with a shooting.

Police Chief John Erisman said officers arrested 18-year-old Joel Anthony Devora pending charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly shot a man with whom he argued earlier in the evening.

A man allegedly found drunk and nearly naked inside a home on Gaines Street in April has been indicted on a count of burglary and a count of driving while intoxicated.

Ennis Police Chief John Erisman said police jailed Randall Williford, 49, on April 15 on the DWI charge after a traffic stop. Police held Williford overnight in the city jail, Erisman said. He requested medical attention in the morning April 16, and officers took him to Ennis Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The hunt for a “person of interest” continues in a mid-afternoon shooting on Gilmer Street in Ennis on Friday.

No arrests have been made in the case, which was reported to police at 2:30 p.m. after a gunshot missed its apparent target in the 200 block of Gilmer Street and struck the home above a window. Police declined to identify the man and his girlfriend, who were present at the home at the time.

Police are searching for a suspect after responding to the scene of a reported shooting on Gilmer Street in Ennis at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

A man and his girlfriend were at the home at the time of the shooting, which left no reported injuries, said Ennis Police Chief John Erisman.

A description of the suspect was not immediately available, but the suspect was apparently thought to be driving a red, four-door vehicle southbound on McKinney Street immediately after the shooting.

Ellis County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Waxahachie man on Monday afternoon in connection to an assault with cookware.

ECSO spokesperson JoAnn Livingston said deputies were dispatched to the 1300 block of Southview in Waxahachie on a report of an assault. They arrived to find a 32-year-old woman at a neighbor’s house with a bleeding head wound. She  told deputies her husband struck her several times in the head with a cooking pot.

Police arrested a man Sunday pending charges of aggravated assault after he was treated for a gunshot wound.

Lt. Mike Hopson of the Ennis Police Department said officers took 18-year-old Shane Kauffman into custody after his release from medical care stemming from an April 6 incident during which he allegedly exchanged gunfire with a homeowner in the 500 block of W. Milam Street.

The task force investigating the murders of Mike and Cynthia McLelland and Mark Hasse believe they have found the vehicle used during the Hasse killing.

Lt. Justin Lewis said in a recent report a search warrant was issued on April 19 for a 2001 Mercury Sable found by task force investigators that is linked to Hasse’s murder.
