Despite a 6-1 victory in Game 2 of a best of 3 series against the Lovejoy Lady Leopards, the Ennis Lady Lions fell 10-2 in Game 3 on Saturday night to end the season.

The late Saturday elimination began, according to Coach Rodney McNeill, when the Lions lost 2-1 at Lovejoy on Friday night.

The Ennis Lady Lions and Lovejoy Leopards faced each other Friday night in the first game of the Region II quarterfinals. Both teams put up a defensive battle that wasn’t decided until the end of the seventh inning. Despite outhitting the Leopards by a two to one margin, the Lions fell to Lovejoy 2-1.

“In a game like this, you just have to come up with big hits. They’re the one who got the big hit first right there in the seventh inning,” Lion coach Rodney McNeill said.

The Ennis Lady Lions overcame early defensive struggles to eliminate the Royse City Lady Bulldogs on Saturday night with a 10-3 victory.

A high-powered offense lead by senior catcher Riley Fira’s two home runs put the game out of reach early for the Lady Bulldogs, ending their postseason early and clinching the area championship for Ennis.

Jessica Leaks always knew she wanted to play basketball in college, she just didn’t know where.

That question has now been answered.

Leaks has agreed to play for Howard Payne University in Brownwood, and was to be recognized in a special ceremony at 2:30 p.m today at Ennis High School.

The Ennis Lion baseball teams were honored Tuesday night in front of a room full of friends and families at the Lion baseball banquet.

Kalinec opened the ceremonies by thanking the Ennis Lion Booster Club and recognizing Bryon Adams as the president of the club. After two years of service, Adams will step down after this year.

The Ennis Lady Lions kicked off postseason play with a bang Friday night as the offense racked up 10 runs on 15 hits behind a perfect performance by Taylor Maliska, drubbing the Lindale Lady Eagles 10-0.

All but one Lion batter had at least one hit, punishing Lindale pitcher Kat Baldwin early on in the game with hard-hit fouls and singles. The Lions wouldn’t score until the bottom of the third inning, which Coach Rodney McNeill said is something the team needs to work on.

Senior Sara Griffin is another exceptional Lion athlete that Ennis is proud of. Griffin’s athletic abilities and tennis skills earned her interest from a number of colleges. After weighing her options and visiting various schools, she chose to sign with Henderson University in Arkansas last Friday.

“There was a lot I had to go look at, but this one had the best offer,” Griffin said. “I’m glad I’m getting one to a good (division II) school.”

With playoff chances gone after falling 8-4 to Mansfield Summit last Tuesday, the Ennis Lions (11-15-2, 5-8) were focused on shutting down a struggling Lancaster Tiger team on Friday. The Lions defeated the Tigers 20-1 after five innings of play.

“We came out there to get a win. Everybody did a good job. I’m proud of everybody. I’m proud of Brandon for throwing a really good game,” senior center fielder Cody Dixon said.

John Marlin and Michael Nicklas advanced out of the first round in boys’ doubles at the regional tournament, but fell to Sherman in the second round.

The Ennis Lion varsity tennis team’s playoff run came to an end  in the 4A Region II tournament, and the team concluded the 2013 season with a well-deserved 15-4A district championship title.

“I was pleased with the way our players competed. Regionals is just tough. There are no easy rounds,” coach Keith Howard said.
