Defensive line defused SOC power game

Four victories into their bid for a fifth state championship, the Ennis defense has turned in a pair of defensive gems. Friday’s 31-14 triumph over South Oak Cliff, a team with an overpowering offense, revealed a scheme and a team bent on execution.

The only two remaining Top 10, Class 5A, Division II teams in the playoff, No. 7 Ennis and No. 10 Canutillo, will meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Lowrey Field at Plains Capital Park in Lubbock.

Ennis will play El Paso Canutillo at 7 p.m. Friday at Plains Capital Park in Lubbock. The Lions will play as the home team at Lowery Field, located at 66th Street and Avenue P.

The defense never rests

Led by an unheralded defensive unit that handcuffed an explosive South Oak Cliff team, Ennis rolled to the state semifinals for a second consecutive year in a convincing, 31-14 rout of the Bears.

A week after crushing Frisco Heritage with 11 touchdowns, South Oak Cliff was hit early and often by an Ennis team that stunned, then knocked out the Bears, 31-14, in the state quarterfinals.

Lions await stern test in SOC Bears

Photo by brucelattimer.com / Fresh from scoring the final 21 points in a 49-35 triumph over The Colony on Friday, the Lions savor a satisfying win on their rival's field in Waxahachie. Ennis (11-2) meets South Oak Cliff (10-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Newsom Stadium in Mansfield. The winner will face the victor between El Paso Canutillo (12-1) and Ft. Worth Everman (9-4), who play Saturday in Midland.

Post-season in football is a one-week season. Before Ennis head coach Jack Alvarez could Lumpkins Stadium after a thrilling 49-35 third-round victory over The Colony, a better-than-advertised squad from near Lewisville, he was being asked about the next game. So much for savoring a win for a day.

While the Ennis team has already moved past the win over The Colony and is perparing for South Oak Cliff, fans won’t easily forget the courageous performance by the Lions on Friday.

Scoring the final 21 points of the game, all in the last 10 minutes, a resilient Ennis football team rallied to defeat The Colony, 49-35, before a sold out Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie.

In a game surely to be chronicled in Ennis Lions lore, the Area Round 17-13 triumph over Timberview, who were picked to win by 5-of-7 sportswriters in one Dallas newspaper, were strategies and sizable plays that spelled the difference.

Thanks to a last minute chopping down of No. 4 ranked Timberview, No. 7 ranked Ennis (10-2) has advanced to play The Colony (9-3) in Friday’s regional semifinal at Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

When No. 7 ranked Ennis faces No. 3 Timberview on Friday in Mansfield, a rematch of their season opener, the storylines will be clear.

Palmer’s season comes to close

Palmer’s season came to an end Saturday in Glen Rose with a 44-35 upset loss to the Clifton Cubs in the first round of the state playoffs. The Bulldogs held the lead for most of the game and were up 29-28 going into the fourth quarter, but the team was outscored 15-6 in the fourth.
Head coach Don Waddle said the key factor that put Clifton ahead was a couple of momentum swinging turnovers.

Palmer has chance to reach another milestone

The Palmer Bulldogs have a chance to do something they have only done once in their history — win a playoff game.
