Post-season in football is a one-week season. Before Ennis head coach Jack Alvarez could Lumpkins Stadium after a thrilling 49-35 third-round victory over The Colony, a better-than-advertised squad from near Lewisville, he was being asked about the next game. So much for savoring a win for a day.
While the Ennis team has already moved past the win over The Colony and is perparing for South Oak Cliff, fans won’t easily forget the courageous performance by the Lions on Friday.
Advancing to their second straight regional final by eliminating The Colony 49-35 on Friday, next up for Ennis will be South Oak Cliff (10-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mansfield’s Vernon Newsom Stadium.
Scoring the final 21 points of the game, all in the last 10 minutes, a resilient Ennis football team rallied to defeat The Colony, 49-35, before a sold out Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie.
In a game surely to be chronicled in Ennis Lions lore, the Area Round 17-13 triumph over Timberview, who were picked to win by 5-of-7 sportswriters in one Dallas newspaper, were strategies and sizable plays that spelled the difference.
Thanks to a last minute chopping down of No. 4 ranked Timberview, No. 7 ranked Ennis (10-2) has advanced to play The Colony (9-3) in Friday’s regional semifinal at Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
When No. 7 ranked Ennis faces No. 3 Timberview on Friday in Mansfield, a rematch of their season opener, the storylines will be clear.
Palmer’s season came to an end Saturday in Glen Rose with a 44-35 upset loss to the Clifton Cubs in the first round of the state playoffs. The Bulldogs held the lead for most of the game and were up 29-28 going into the fourth quarter, but the team was outscored 15-6 in the fourth.
Head coach Don Waddle said the key factor that put Clifton ahead was a couple of momentum swinging turnovers.
The Palmer Bulldogs have a chance to do something they have only done once in their history — win a playoff game.
Soft-spoken and unassuming is not the typical, modern day football player. Devin Smith, the starting quarterback for No. 7 ranked Ennis couldn’t care less.
As the seconds ticked away in the Palmer, Maypearl game last Friday, there was a lot on the line for both teams.

Ennis travels to East Texas for the fourth time in less than two months when they take on Lindale at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the 6,200 seat Eagle Stadium.
A season of considerable improvement comes to an end on Tuesday when Ennis (15-24) plays on the road at 5:30 p.m. at the Frank Solis Gym against No. 15 ranked Waxahachie (31-10).
