Give A Kid A Chance, the community agency that provides back-to-school assistance and outreach throughout the year, is accepting online nominations for the August event at www.giveakidachance.com. Applications will be accepted through the end of May. An online application isn’t necessary if you have already returned a form distributed by Ennis ISD. The event is at Ennis High School from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17.

Rotary Club sponsoring Polka Run on May 25

The Ennis Rotary Club is again sponsoring the 15th annual Polkafest Run at 7 a.m. May 25. The event, held on the Saturday morning of the National Polka Festival, begins with early registration at 5 a.m. Maps of the run courses are available at www.ennispolkarun.com. Awards go to the top finishers in each age group, the overall male and female finishers and the top Masters (age 40-plus) finisher. Information, and registration packets will be available starting May 13 at the Ennis Chamber of Commerce. Literary Guild meeting May 21

The Ennis Literary Guild will host its next reviewer program at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 21 at Wildflower Cafe. The review is slated from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. featuring Dave Lieber on his book “Moving to Texas: Is the Bark Worse than the Bite?” Cost per event at the door is $20, which includes lunch without dessert or $10 with lunch not included. A yearly membership to the guild is $45.

Summer school registration open

Registration is under way for summer school at Ennis High School. Signups run through May 31. Registration packets may be picked up at the EHS Ensign office or can be downloaded from the EHS home page on the Ennis ISD website. Summer School begins June 17 and runs through July 25. It is offered Monday through Thursday in two summer sessions — June 17-July 3 and July 8-25. Hours are 7:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Breaks are given, but students may bring snacks. In-district tuition is $150 (1/2 credit course/1 semester) and $300 (1 credit course/2 semesters). Out-of-district tuition is $200 (1/2 credit course/1 semester) and $400 (1 credit course/2 semesters). For the courses offered or more information, call EHS at 972-872-3500.

Police hunting alleged shooter

Police are searching for a suspect after responding to the scene of a reported shooting on Gilmer Street in Ennis at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

A man and his girlfriend were at the home at the time of the shooting, which left no reported injuries, said Ennis Police Chief John Erisman.

A description of the suspect was not immediately available, but the suspect was apparently thought to be driving a red, four-door vehicle southbound on McKinney Street immediately after the shooting.
