Neighbors: get with the program

The concept of a neighborhood watch program might sound a little goofy or oldfashioned to you, but be assured it can make a real difference in your community.
It was recently reported that a burglary was prevented here in Ennis – along with two previous burglary cases being cleared – through the assistance of neighborhood residents paying close attention to the activities going on along their streets. A person noticed a man who did not look familiar to the area and erring on the side of caution decided to contact the local police. Through an investigation it was discovered the suspect was attempting to rob a nearby home with burglary tools in his possession and stolen items from other crimes found in his vehicle. All because a curious neighbor made a brief phone call to confirm a stranger’s motive for being in the area a crime was prevented. If only every crime could be stopped with this simple of a method.
A neighborhood watch doesn’t have to involve a strict program with meetings every week and rules to stringently follow. It can be as easy and straightforward as neighbors promising to keep a look out for one another’s home and property. If you should happen to see some strange or suspicious activity going on across the street or maybe a moving truck is packing up your neighbor’s high-dollar stuff despite your neighbor never having mentioned wanting to move, don’t hesitate to call local law enforcement. Better safe than sorry we always say.
A neighborhood watch program is one of those things that has all the upsides in the world and no real downside to speak of. If you see a car passing by several times and you don’t think it belongs, make a phone call. If people keep hanging around with no real business of any kind, make a phone call. It really is that simple.
