All stories not created equal

The other day a woman came in to talk to me about Bigfoot.

Let that sink in for a moment. A citizen of our community went through the trouble of coming to our office to talk to a journalist about Bigfoot.

A certain percentage of the stories I write come from people who approach us, either by calling or coming in personally to talk to us unsolicited. These stories literally “walk through the door at us,” to paraphrase EDN Editor Nick Todaro. Some of the best stories I’ve written since I’ve been here made themselves known this way and it’s always a pleasant surprise. Considering the size of both our community and our news operation here, its important for us to address everyone who walks through the door with the same credulity and attention. Even the stories about Bigfoot.
