Broken heroes: Maybe we can be our own
It’s not so much a surprise as a big letdown that our vaunted heroes continually seem to fall short of their heroic image in this country.
Perhaps it’s a commentary on the world today that we as a society seek so hard to find people to lift into stardom, then circle like sharks who’ve caught the scent of blood once their human frailty comes to light. The worst part of it is our need to find celebrities and make Cinderella stories out of athletes and entertainers will likely be unhindered by any such revelations about people we have previously enshrined.
