Local resident Marty Nelson is getting a lot more press than he probably ever thought he’d receive. But in this case, it’s a good thing. Not everybody can say that.

Nelson was announced as the Ennis Daily News’ volunteer of the year in our annual Best of the Best reader’s choice awards. It’s one of the more coveted personal awards, along with public official of the year (Matt Walker), police officer of the year (Brian Clark), fireman of the year (Chad Wester) and childcare worker (Carolyn Greer). We separated those awards from the rest, which are almost exclusively identifying businesses that involve a team effort, because of the personal nature. These individuals take public service to another level without any real financial incentive beyond their paychecks or in Nelson’s case a few thank yous.
