Mental health concerns growing

Whenever I attend a sheriff’s training conference or similar event, it has not been unusual for the topic of mental health issues in the jail to be discussed. And if it was not discussed formally in the classroom, it was certainly discussed informally by the sheriffs.

Through the years, as mental health funding changed, the county jail system has seen an increase in mental health issues. Why? Because instead of people with mental health challenges being in a program or facility for their problems, they have found their way into county jails.
