Mohammed Hashemi, a Garrett gas station owner murdered in April, leaves behind seven children and a wife.

He had six daughters, ages 16, 14, 10, 7 and twins age 1 and a half. His son is 4 years old. Hashemi had no life insurance and was struggling to cover expenses, according to family, but was staying afloat and making ends meet.

An account has been set up at Commercial State Bank to aid the family with expenses.

School supplies, cash needed
The Give A Kid A Chance organization is still in need of donations to provide more than 1,000 school-age children with the tools they’ll need to have a successful academic year on Aug. 7.

A $50 donation will supply one child with a school uniform, a backpack and a set of grade-specific school supplies. A $20 donation will afford one student a full set of supplies. Those interested in donating to the cause can also purchase school supplies and drop them off at New Hope Church. Supplies needed include #2 Pencils, pens (black, red and blue), Eight-pack markers, 24-pack crayons, 12-pack colored pencils, highlighters, wide ruled loose leaf notebook paper, 70 page spiral notebooks, folders with brads and pockets, manila paper, construction paper, lined index cards, eight ounce glue, rulers, pink pearl erasers, quart-size storage bags, gallon-size storage bags and boxes of facial tissue.

ECCs open for registration
Early childhood registration is taking place at the Carver and Crockett early childhood centers. Until Aug. 6, the campuses are open from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday for registration.

Those interested in the Head Start program may register at Carver.

Documentation required to register: original copy of birth certificate, up-to-date immunization records or current exemptions, original copy of Social Security card and proof of residence such as a utility bill. For students registering for Pre-K or Head Start, proof of family income is also required.

In regards to student attendance zones, Crockett serves students who live in the Bowie Elementary and Houston Elementary zones, while Carver serves students who reside in the Austin Elementary and Travis Elementary zones.

An accurate count of early childhood students is vital for each campus to determine proper staffing levels for the next school year. For more information, contact Carver at 972-872-3730 or Crockett at 972-872-7131.

B&G offering sports camps
The Boys and Girls Club of Ennis is offering a football camp for boys under new health and fitness coordinator DeMarques Jones from July 12-16 for boys ages 6-12. Football camp is $10. Signups must be club members — new membership is $28 for the summer, renewal is $25.

Anthony Drive VBS continues
Anthony Drive Church is hosting Vacation Bible School this week. Children ages three through sixth grade are admitted free from 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 12-16. Call 972-875-3632 for more information.

Saddle up for Saddle Ridge Ranch set among the stunning vistas and wide-open spaces of Big Sky country. Saddle Ridge Ranch is a place where kids can ask questions and discover the answers found in God’s Word. During their day at the ranch, kids will visit Worship Rally and the Bible Study Bunkhouse. Around the ranch they will also experience crafts at Blazing Star Stables, music at Mustang Mountain, supper at the Big Sky Grill and bible study at Campfire Creek.
