Ennis Independent School District Police Chief Ross Jones spoke to Bowie Elementary students Monday about the importance of staying drug free.

“I love doing this the most,” Jones said. “This is my favorite part of my job.”

Jones said he wanted each student to know they are special and loved by many people.

“We need them to love themselves,” Jones said. “When they do that they know not to put anything in their body that would hurt them.”

Jones told the students to beware of inhalants, which can be fatal and he told them not to take any prescription pills unless the bottle has their name on it and it was prescribed for them. Students were also warned to stay away from anything with a skull and crossbones symbol on it, which means the item is deadly.

Jones was there to help celebrate drug-free month and Red Ribbon Week. During Red Ribbon Week, each day has a theme designed to promote being drug free. Monday was backwards day and students wore their clothes backwards. Drug free bracelets were also handed out and students signed drug free pledge cards.

Tuesday’s theme is “Trash out Drugs.” Students will get recycling stickers, which support the new recycling program at Bowie elementary. Students can bring recyclable paper to help fill the bin.

Students will “plant the promise and stomp out drugs” by wearing sunglasses and boots Wednesday. They will also plant wildflowers in designated areas.

On Thursday, students will wear silly socks in order to “sock it to drugs” and attend a motivational assembly.

Friday will be “Hugs not Drugs” day, with students bringing stuffed animals to school. Classes will read and take AR tests that day and the class in each grade with the highest number of points will get a prize.
