A suspect shot in a Monday confrontation with an Ellis County Sheriff’s deputy near Bristol is in good condition, authorities said.

The ECSO and Department of Public Safety’s Ranger Division are investigating the incident, described as a traffic stop following a separate report of a domestic incident at a nearby home. During the stop, authorities said, the man charged the deputy with a knife, and the deputy shot the man once in the abdomen.

He was airlifted to a Dallas hospital and is “doing well,” said DPS spokesman Lt. James Salter. The identity of the deputy involved in the incident is being withheld for the time being while DPS and ECSO officials coordinate the investigation and the release of information, Salter said.

The incident occurred in the 9000 block of FM 660 east of Palmer.
