A 2006 Ennis graduate and Missouri State student who had great success on the Lions football team has found himself in a jail cell on multiple charges, including burglary of a habitation, burglary of a coin operated machine, possession of marijuana more than four ounces, unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance.

Ryan Christopher Marinez, 21, was taken into custody Friday morning after an Ellis County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped Marinez’s vehicle outside Waxahachie in connection with a burglary earlier in the day in Ennis. Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson said at 6:33 a.m. Ennis police received a report of a man who had burglarized a home in the 1400 block of Johnson Avenue. The complainant told police the suspect had left the scene but was being tailed so the man’s location would be known. Ennis police contacted the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office regarding the incident and to inform the agency of where the suspect’s vehicle was headed, which led to deputy Peter Steuer locating and stopping the suspect, who was later identified as Marinez.

The stolen property, which consisted of two pit bulldogs and heaters, was recovered and returned to its owner.

A search of Marinez’s vehicle resulted in police finding a 9 mm handgun, eight bottles of steroids, more than four ounces of marijuana, ammunition and $545 in cash. Hopson said police also located a large amount of coins officers believe to be taken from a carwash vacuum-cleaning machine.

Marinez graduated from Ennis High School after a prolific career as a Lion athlete. Marinez was voted third team all-state as a senior after accumulating 86 tackles and four interceptions. He was voted first team all-district and all-region his senior season and was named district special teams player of the year. Marinez led the state with nine interceptions as a junior and was named first team all-state. He also was an all-district centerfielder for the Lions’ baseball team as a junior.

After graduation Marinez spent one year on the Missouri State University 2006 football roster as a defensive back. Marinez’s football career ended after he and three other Missouri State Bear football players were each charged with 10 Class C felonies in April 2007.

Marinez and the other players were caught on the campus’ security cameras breaking down parking lot gate arms, running and jumping over cars damaging the vehicles. Mike Huddleston, Greene County assistant prosecutor, said of the arrest that the students caused more than $17,000 in damage to 18 cars and the school’s property.

Woman charged with assault

Ennis police arrested a woman Thursday night after learning of a fight between her and another woman regarding the complaint’s husband.

According to Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson, at approximately 11:30 p.m. Officer Kevin Tuley was dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of Anthony Drive to find two women fighting on the ground. Police broke the fight up and noticed one woman had bite marks on her leg and a cut on her arm. During the fight, the suspect had bitten the victim on the leg.

Upon speaking with the individuals involved, it was discovered the fight was a result of the suspect dating the victim’s husband, which when later questioned the husband confirmed was true.

The victim did not require medical attention following the altercation.

The woman was taken into custody and transported to Ennis police department without further incident.

Martita Rojas, 29, was charged with assault with bodily injury.

Drug, weapon arrest made

An Ennis man refusing to leave a residence in the early hours of New Years Day was arrested on weapon and drug possession charges.

Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson said at 2:09 a.m. patrol officer Tony Price was dispatched to 212 W. Knox St. in reference to a disturbance. A male subject was found to be knocking on the door of the residence. Price spoke with the complainant, who claimed the suspect was hassling the residents and refused to leave when told to do so.

Price told the suspect to leave the residence and while speaking with the man it was discovered he had marijuana in his possession. The man was taken into custody and a later search of the suspect’s vehicle resulted in a 9 mm handgun being found.

Daniel Godinez, 26, of Ennis was charged with possession of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
