School construction coming along

The construction associated with the Ennis ISD’s 2008 bond issue has had its setbacks, but now, thanks to a cooperative effort between staff at both Ennis ISD and Charter Builders, things are under way.
In fact, the majority of the construction at Jack Lummus Intermediate School hadn’t even begun until about a month ago. A gas line was running right across the property where the school was to be built, and had to be moved prior to construction. However, when the construction did finally begin, it did so without interruption. As of Tuesday, the steal frame was set and masonry for the gym was complete. Bricks are starting to be laid on the sixth-grade wing.
“Things are going really well now,” said Mike Green, general superintendent for Charter Builders. “We’ve done a lot in the last 30 days.”
Since the initial plans for Lummus were released, Ennis ISD Owner’s Representative Greg Burns has been able to tweak them to better meet the needs of teachers and students. For instance, since fourth-grade students do not need science labs, they were eliminated from the plans.
“We clarified the needs of each grade level, and refined the design to cut out unnecessary costs,” Burns said.
The funds saved were then allocated to reworking the nurse’s office, teachers’ lounge and cafeteria to be more efficient and better serve the needs of the students, teachers and other staff. As owner’s representative, Burns finds out what the teachers need in a new school, and communicates those needs to the construction company, Charter Builders. He does this while keeping the project within budget.
