Residents in southern Ellis County will soon have a 28-mile stretch of natural gas pipeline running beneath their feet.
Houston-based Willbros Construction is currently in the beginning stages of laying the pipeline in Precincts Two and Precinct Three in Ellis County. The entire length of the pipeline is about 146 miles, and it travels from Minden to Maypearl. Willbros began construction February in Minden, and is heading west from there. A crew of about 600 has been working in Ellis County for three weeks, but put up signs at the end of April to make residents aware of the upcoming construction.
The pipeline will cross into Ellis County from Navarro County near the intersection of Salma and Oak Grove roads south of Alma. The line will then cross Ensign Road just south of Cummins Creek Road, and continue on through Bardwell just south of Lake Bardwell. The line will cross FM 985 and then Krajca Road. After passing through Bardwell, it will cross FM 984 twice, and then pass south of Lake Waxahachie, north of Forreston and Five Points, and then into Maypearl. In Maypearl, the gas line will connect to a compressor station, said Louis Johnston, assistant superintendent for Willbros Construction. Every 10 miles, there will be a main line valve coming from the pipeline. There will also be various service taps along the way to distribute power to various industrial companies.
