Red Cross meets needs

When disaster strikes, there is one entity that arrives shortly after first-responders to offer comfort and supplies.

American Red Cross volunteers are trained to prepare for, prevent and respond to disasters. The Red Cross can help in large-scale disasters, such as tornadoes and hurricanes, and small-scale disasters such as a fire in a family home, said Shelly Campbell, an emergency services specialist with the Corsicana branch of the Dallas-area chapter of the American Red Cross.

“We actually have more small disasters than large,” Campbell said.

In the last year in Ennis, American Red Cross volunteers served 30 individuals who were victims of home fires, she said.

The Corsicana branch serves Ellis and Navarro counties, and has 117 volunteers. Someone is always on call, and the Red Cross has two trucks in its service area. This makes immediate disaster response possible, Campbell said.
