CASA fights for children

Every year in Ellis County, many children go through the foster care system.

Child Protective Services works to have the children placed in permanent homes, but each worker has a large caseload that makes it nearly impossible to give the necessary amount of attention to each child. This is where Court Appointed Special Advocates comes in, said Rhodie Rawls, executive director of CASA of Ellis County.

“(CPS) does the best they can, but it’s an overburdened system,” Rawls said.

Since CASA volunteers only have one case at a time, they can be a voice for the child and advocate for them in the court system, she said. Volunteers attend hearings, and visit the child at least once a month.

Support the united way

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Ellis County is a nonprofit agency affiliated with the Greater Ennis United Way.

United Way is still a long way from its $300,000 fundraising goal for the year, but individuals have until December to make donations to benefit a host of agencies under its umbrella.
