Ennis man shares Berlin Wall story

When the Berlin Wall was torn down 20 years ago, many people in Ennis and around the world watched it on TV, but one Ennis resident living in Berlin at the time saw it all first hand.

Charles Kelker served in the Army and was stationed in Berlin in 1971-75. He left the service in 1975, but returned to Berlin in 1976, he said.

Upon his return, he began a civilian career with the military that included a job at the Post Exchange and later a position as chief of budget and management at the supply and services division of U.S. Army Berlin.

Built in the early 1960s, the Berlin Wall had stood between East and West Berlin while Kelker was there, and served as a reminder of the country’s division over communism, he said.
