Lampasas to flow over U.S. 287

With rights-of-way already available and the large amount of work planned for the Lampasas Street-U.S. 287 junction, TxDOT anticipates the highway expansion project work on the Ennis bypass will start in that area.

Scott Morrow, TxDOT district engineer, said more than 1 million cubic yards of excavation will have to be done throughout the bypass project, with the vast majority of the earth-moving set for the Lampasas section. The plan now calls for U.S. 287 to be reconstructed to flow underneath an overpass at Lampasas Street.

“In order to make the interchange grade separated, we had originally thought about going over (Lampasas),” Morrow said. “With the proximity of the main lanes of the highway to (Dorie Miller Intermediate School) and (Ennis Regional Medical Center) and the development there, if you went in and went over, it would require a lot more right-of-way in order to tie everything back in.

“It turns out that in order to not have to relocate the school or buildings associated with the hospital, (the state chose the underpass option).”
