The Telico Fire Department recently placed in a chili cook off benefiting fallen fire fighters, and the department hopes to bring the organization to Ellis County to hold a chili cook off next year.

Last month, Don Pechal, assistant chief of the Telico VFD and Retha Magness, secretary of the Telico VFD, went to Grapevine to participate in the Stop Drop ‘n Roll Chili Cook Off. The event was a benefit for the WPI Fire Fighters Fund, which was founded in 1999 to benefit families of fallen fire fighters. The Telico VFD won best booth at the competition.

Magness said she received a flier about the cook off in early October. When she saw it was a benefit for fire fighters killed in the line of duty, she jumped at the chance to enter.

“It spoke of helping fire fighters,” she said. “I grabbed it up in a heartbeat.”

A volunteer fire fighter herself, Magness said she knew that fire fighters were putting their life on the line every day.
