Ennis police arrested three people believed to be behind the thefts of several Ennis Daily News newspaper vending machines Monday.

Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson, Ennis Police Department spokesman, said the bust occurred at about 3 a.m. Monday after officer Donnie Trull happened upon a Chevy pickup at S. Hall Street and W. Brown Street that was sitting in a lot. Three people at the scene — James Boyette, 23, of Dallas, Jalea Gainus, 20, of Ennis, and Jenero Bautista, 18, of Ferris — were charged with engaging in organized criminal activity after officers discovered a newspaper rack on the ground near the truck.

Hopson said Trull spoke to Boyette, who was outside of the truck without a shirt or shoes when he arrived at the scene, and the suspect asked for permission to put his shirt on. Another officer arrived and discovered a pink bag of what looked to be marijuana on the ground near the truck.

“They asked who it belonged to and no one responded,” Hopson said. “Bautista eventually said it was his and the officers arrested him for possession of marijuana.”

Officers began questioning the occupants of the truck about the newspaper machine, and believing it was stolen, handcuffed Boyette and Gainus.
