State District Court Judge Gene Knize has announced he is not seeking re-election as judge of the 40th Judicial District Court in Ellis County.

“By the end of my current term, I will have completed 40 years of employment with Ellis County, including 24 years as district judge,” Knize said in a release. “The citizens of Ellis County have bestowed the honor of allowing me to serve and I did my best to render fair and just decisions while exercising that privilege.”

Knize began his legal career as an assistant district attorney following service as an artillery officer in the U.S. Army. He was appointed district attorney and subsequently elected to four consecutive terms. He was then elected to the district judge’s chair and has been re-elected five times.
