Kiwanis tops food goal

With help from the community, the Ennis Kiwanis Club and Super 1 Foods outpaced their goal in the Spirit of Christmas Food Drive.

“We are just in awe of the response this year,” said Kiwanis President Ellen Miller.

Although the group needed food for 74 boxes, they ended up with enough to fill at least 20 more. Miller said she wasn’t sure how well the drive would do when it began last month because there were so many other things going on in the community, but the drive turned out to be a success.

Donations were accepted at Super 1 Foods and a food drive was held at Houston Elementary School. From Houston alone, the Kiwanis collected almost 2,000 canned goods, Miller said.

“Sam Houston (Elementary School) was phenomenal,” she said.
