Commission tables ‘crime control’ district

Phil Banker, [email protected]

The Ennis City Commission voted 4-2 to table the creation of a committee for a proposed Crime Control and Prevention District, essentially pushing the district’s creation off of the election ballot in November.

The district would have been funded by a .25 percent increase in sales taxes to be approved by voters in the November general election. However, to meet the deadlines required to call said election, a committee would have had to be formed last night to begin the process of selecting permanent members and establishing budget priorities.

City Manager Chuck Ewings said with Monday’s vote, the district’s creation will be delayed until at least 2015.
