GAKAC welcomes more kids than ever

Phil Banker, p...@ennisdailynews.com

More families and students than ever came out to Ennis High School on Saturday for what organizer Marty Nelson called the largest Give-a-Kid-a-Chance event yet.

Nelson said volunteers gave out 1,250 backpacks full of school supplies for students in need, a 25 percent increase from last year.

“The 100 extra backpacks we got from the Salvation Army came in handy,” Nelson said. “We gave away everything we had.”

The annual event provides back-to-school supplies and services to children and families in need, ranging from new school uniforms and school supplies to health checks, haircuts and a hot meal for students and their families.
