U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis, praised police in a news release that declared he and his staff were unharmed following the lockdown of Capitol Hill after a shooting incident this afternoon.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in today’s deadly incident on Capitol Hill,” Barton said. “Hearing that a child was involved only makes it more heartbreaking. My staff and I were ordered to shelter in place for a short time, but we are all safe.

“I want to thank the Secret Service at the White House for protecting the President, and our valiant capitol police for protecting Congress while United States Park Police worked to keep tourists safe. My staff and I witnessed officers respond to the scene. They were superb.”
