Authorities said a crash involving a work convoy truck and an 18-wheeler sent one driver to the hospital in critical condition this afternoon, closing I-45 for several hours in Navarro County.

Trooper Curtis Putz of the Texas Highway Patrol said both trucks were in the outside lane of northbound Interstate 45 in Rice near the Chatfield Road exit. He said driver inattention lead to the 18-wheeler crashing into the rear of the convoy truck, pushing both off the road into the median.

A Hazardous Materials team was on the scene after 2 p.m., working to clean up what was apparently a chemical used in highway paint that had spilled during the crash.
