Elmer Levy Eiland (03-23-2010)
Elmer Levy Eiland, 92, of Waxahachie passed away peacefully March 22, 2010. He was born in the Gay Hill Community near Rockdale, Texas to Calvin Levy Eiland and Freida Annie Henke Eiland on April 13, 1917. His parents were fruit and vegetable farmers and when Elmer was 15 his father was hurt and unable to work. As the eldest son he had to take over the farming and selling of the fruits and vegetables.
Elmer worked briefly in Houston before joining the Army in February of 1941. He served with the 36th Division in North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Central Europe until July 1945. He was a medic on the front lines tending to the wounded, often without adequate supplies and was awarded many medals including the Bronze Star.
Elmer married his sweetheart Olga Rose Kamenicky on March 23, 1946. By July of 1946 he had landed a job with Oak Farms Dairies in Dallas and soon added three children to the family. In 1977 he retired and moved with Olga to a small farm in Bristol. He had a long and very active retirement filled with lots of traveling with a travel trailer and many hours working in a fabulous garden.
Elmer is preceded in death by his parents and five siblings, Thelmer Staffelbach, Elbert Eiland, Margaret Lee Gifford, Lona Whiteley and Calvin Eiland Jr.
His survivors are his wife of 64 years, Olga, children David Eiland of Bristol, Diane Eiland and Debra Eiland Turner and her husband Wayne of Waxahachie, one grandson, Nick Eiland of Bristol, and sisters Euteva Talley of Rockdale and Lois Wilkins of Hearne.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2010 in the chapel of the Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home in Ennis with funeral services to follow at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Bristol Cemetery.
