Bennie Cornelia Ayers Stokes (06-08-2010)
Bennie Cornelia Ayers Stokes passed from this life on Sunday, June 6, 2010. Bennie was born to John B. and Hattie Lee Ayers in Mount Selman, Texas on April 3, 1913. Bennie married Glyn W. Stokes, Sr. on December 2, 1950, and they were life-long residents of Ennis, Texas.Bennie loved the Lord, and was a charter member of Baylor Baptist Church. In 1980, after having worked forty years, she retired from Southern Pacific Railroad. Her career included positions as a crew caller, caboose cleaner, SP Credit Union volunteer and lastly, as Assistant Chief Clerk in the Transportation Department. For many years she was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Eastern Star. She and Glyn enjoyed many good years of retirement, traveling around the country in their motor home.
Bennie is preceded in death by her husband, Glyn Stokes, on December 4, 2008. A brother and four sisters have gone before her: Goldwin Ayers of Terrell, Texas; Dot McCaw of Ennis, Texas; Lou Rogers of Dallas, Texas; Emma Ewing of Red Oak, Texas; and Juanita Kring of Abilene, Texas.
She is survived by one son, Glyn Walton Stokes, Jr., and his wife, Sonia, of Ennis, Texas, two step-sons: Roy C. Stokes and his wife, Mary Ann, of Crockett, Texas; Robert “Bobby” Stokes and his wife, Betty Jean of Austin, Texas. She leaves eight grandchildren: Carroll Ann Standley; Doug Stokes, David Stokes, Jeanie McLaughlin, Carrie Stokes, Seth Stokes, Sarah Hudson and Samuel Stokes; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Bennie was a loving mother, “Meme”, aunt, and friend to many in the community. Many knew her for her delicious “Cream Cheese Pound Cake,” which she was quick to make for anyone, as she kept a ready store of necessary supplies in the bottom drawer of her refrigerator. No one was a stranger to Bennie’s home; she loved to entertain and no one ever left hungry. Bennie Stokes truly had the spirit of hospitality and a servant’s heart.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, from 6 until 8 p.m. at J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at 10 a.m. in J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Johnny Mansell officiating. Pallbearers will be: Bill McCaw, Bill Coleman, Jimmy Stokes, Don Beene, Gail Kring, and Jerrell Key. Interment will follow at Myrtle Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc.
