Frank Zhanel


Frank Zhanel, 94, passed away in Ennis, Texas on Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Frank was born in Creechville, Texas on April 12, 1919 to Anton and Mary (Dlabaj) Zhanel. He grew up in Creechville, Texas and attended Creechville Schools. On May 6, 1947 he married Margie Krajca and they made their home in Dallas before moving back to Ennis in 1955. He served his country proudly as a Staff Sergeant in the United State Army in the European Theater during WWII where he received a Purple Heart, two Clusters, a Bronze Star and two presidential citations. He worked for Magnolia Oil Company for ten years in the Geo-Physical Lab, was the owner of East Sonoma Welding Repair, as a machinist for Ennis Carbon Plant and for Cody Manufacturing. He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church which he helped to build alongside his father and his brother, John, KJT, the VFW and the American Legion. In his spare time, Frank enjoyed fishing and working with metal. Whatever Frank needed he designed and created in his workshop. His family and his faith were most important in his life Frank is survived by one son, Larry (L.Z.) and his wife, Frances Zhanel of Ennis; four daughters: Shirley, and her husband, Paul Kelly, of Anchorage, Alaska, Carol, and her husband, Brian Zumhof, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Berny and her husband, Ray Distasio, of Ennis and Patty, and her husband, Tommy Lee, of Ennis; one brother, Leslie Zhanel, of Ennis; one sister, Bessie Laznovsky, of Ennis; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margie in January of 2006, five sisters and four brothers. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 12, 2013 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. with Rosary at 7 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel of Ennis. Mass of the Christian Burial will take place on Friday, December 13, 2013 at 10 a.m. in the St. John Catholic Church of Ennis with Father Fred Caldwell as celebrant. Pallbearers will be Jason Zhanel, Jacob Zhanel, Ray Distasio, Frank Macalik, Mark Zhanel and Lawrence Krajca. Interment will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery under the direction of J.E.
