James Edward Bates


1916710James Edward Bates, 86, went to be with his Lord surrounded by loved ones in his home on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. James, son of, Charlie and Omie Iler Lewis Bates, was born in Bristol, Texas on March 15, 1926 where he went to school. James met the love of his life, Betty Prda, in July of 1954; they married on October 21, 1954. They made their home in Ennis where he owned a floor sanding business and raised their three children. He retired from Ennis Automotive in 1988. James was a devoted member of Garrett Baptist Church. He enjoyed the country life, building things and raising chickens and ducks. One of his favorite hobbies was picking up cans. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Betty Prda Bates; daughters: Linda and her husband, Joe Widner and Tina and her husband, Bill Donahoo: son, Keith Bates and his wife, Cristina; six grandchildren: Natasha Widner Walker, Eric Ortiz, Heather Donahoo, Billy Donahoo, Tyler Widner and Christopher Bates; eleven great-grandchildren; brother, Floyd Bates and his wife, Jeanette; sisters: Pauline Stewart, Lauther Ree Stewart, Mae and her husband, Lee Roy Burchfield, Geneva and her husband, Henry Cutbirth and Dorothy and her husband, Jack Clay along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, granddaughter, Shelly Duran and one great-grandson, Alex Case. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis. A Celebration of his life will take place on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel of Ennis with Pastor Keith Bates officiating. Pallbearers will be Joe Widner, Tyler Widner, Bill Donahoo, Billy Donahoo, Matt Walker and Eric Ortiz, honorary pallbearer will be Christopher Bates. Interment will follow in Crisp Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc. The family request in lieu of flowers donations be made in James’s name to the Garrett Baptist Church. www.jekeevermortuary.com
