DALLAS (AP) — A suburban Dallas man is facing up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to animal cruelty charges for beating a cat with a hammer and then beheading and eviscerating the animal.
Jurors will decide the sentence for 18-year-old Oscar Vega, of Grand Prairie, after he pleaded guilty to the charges as jury selection was beginning for his trial Monday.
Vega was arrested Aug. 6.
The Dallas Morning News reports an animal services officer spotted the cat’s remains in a pizza box near Vega’s apartment. A knife found under Vega’s bed was tied to the animal’s death.
No date has been set for the punishment hearing.
