ID on off-duty Dallas-area officer killed in crash

DALLAS (AP) — A coroner in Dallas has identified an off-duty suburban police officer who died in a weekend motorcycle accident.

The Dallas County medical examiner’s office on Monday said the victim was 35-year-old Balch Springs Officer Matthew Garcia of Kaufman.

Dallas police say the crash happened early Sunday on an Interstate 30 interchange when Garcia couldn’t make the curve. Garcia was thrown from his motorcycle over the ramp barrier to the highway about 50 feet below.

Investigators say Garcia’s wife was following in a car, saw the accident and called 911.

Balch Springs police did not immediately provide further details Monday.
