Illinois man jailed on $500K bond in online case
RICHMOND (AP) — A Texas judge has set bond at $500,000 for an Illinois man who drove to the Houston area allegedly to abduct a girl he met online.
The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office says James Wean Jr. was being held Thursday on a charge of attempted aggravated kidnapping. The 49-year-old from Pearl City, Ill., was arrested Tuesday night in Katy.
A detective this month began portraying a 14-year-old girl online after her parents noticed a suspicious exchange on Facebook. Investigators believe Wean planned to kidnap the girl and possibly take her out of the country.
A judge late Wednesday set bond and said Wean must surrender his passport, wear a tracking device and not contact the girl if he’s freed. Jail officials had no information Thursday on an attorney for Wean.
