Jury deliberating in sex scandal court-martial

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A military jury has begun deliberations in the court-martial of a Texas Air Force basic training instructor charged in a sex scandal surrounding instructors at the base.

KSAT-TV of San Antonio reports the case against Tech Sgt. Christopher Smith was turned over to jurors after a day of testimony at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Smith is charged with trying to develop a personal relationship with a trainee and obstructing justice at Lackland. If convicted, he faces up to a year in prison and a dishonorable discharge.

Investigators have counted at least 38 female trainees as alleged victims and implicated 15 instructors.

Last month, Staff Sgt. Luis Walker was sentenced to 20 years in prison for rape and sexual assault.
