Ex-Syrian defense minister said killed in Damascus
BEIRUT (AP) — An authority with direct knowledge of the situation says Hassan Turkmani, a former Syrian defense minister, has died in a bombing in Damascus.
Turkmani is the third Syrian regime official killed in Wednesday’s attack.
The authority asked that his name and profession not be used for fear of reprisals.
The blast struck the National Security building during a meeting of Cabinet ministers and senior security officials.
Syria’s defense minister as well as his deputy who is President Bashar Assad’s brother-in-law also were killed.
Rebels claimed responsibility for the attack. Syrian state TV has blamed a suicide bomber.
