Changing times

Although most press accounts, locally and nationally, weren’t positive where blacks were concerned at the close of the 19th century, there were some surprisingly fair-minded stories. In October 1890 one such news item was recorded in the Galveston Daily News. While racist nomenclature was used, the story was an upbeat one, expressing admiration for the success of a 48 year old black man named Gray Bight who operated a prosperous farm in Ennis. Bight was said to own over 100 acres and to be in “good standing at the bank.” Read stories like this and more in your latest edition of The Ennis News. Be informed, subscribe today!
