Banding together

The Ennis Junior High School placed 24 students in its All-Region Band during auditions held in Duncanville last week.
Some 600 middle school band students from Ennis, Dallas, Waxahachie, Red Oak, Duncanville, DeSoto, Lancaster, Cedar Hill and Midlothian tried out for a spot in the All-Region Band category, a competition recognizing the most elite middle school band students in the area.
Students started on the audition material at the Junior High band camp in August, attended before and after school section rehearsals, took private lessons, sought extra help during their lunch and advisory periods and practiced hundreds of hours in order to master the difficult musical exercises and scales required for the audition.
Said Junior High Band Director David Ingram: “We’ve had 20 plus students making the region band for the last three years. Reaching that level of quality was a tremendous task. But, once you reach it we have to double our efforts to try to maintain it and improve upon it. Based on the number of seventh graders who earned a chair, we will strive for the 30 mark next year.”
The band now begins preparation for its annual holiday concert, to be held Dec. 13 at Ennis’ San Jacinto Auditorium.
The Ennis Junior High Band Directors are David Ingram, Steven Bunch, Ron Stokes, Gary Goodwin and Stephen Shoop.
