Perry proclaims Jan. ‘Polka Music Month’

Governor officially recognizes Czech music heritage
Gov. Rick Perry has designated January “Polka Music Month in Texas” and that’s music to the ears of Ennis fans of the many Czech bands that make this city their home base.
And the governor’s declaration is just in time to focus local attention on the Czech Music Festival coming up Feb. 9 at the Sokol Activity Center, where such bands as the Ennis Czech Boys, Jak Se Do, Czech & Then Some, the Jodie Mikula Orchestra and the Harvesters will perform. (See “Local Briefs” in this issue for more information on the Czech Music Fest.)
Perry’s official proclamation (signed Dec. 21) has been read regularly on local radio stations, particularly KBEC Radio 1390 AM which features the “Sunday Morning Polka Show,” hosted by Ennis’ own Johnnie Krajca, founder of the National Polka Festival’s King and Queen dance contest.
The governor’s proclamation, in full, read:
“Texas is home to many who have come from far and near to build this great land. The rich musical tradition and heritage that is unique to Texas reflects the cultural expressions and emotions of a diverse people. Polka is a distinctive blend of music that helps to weave the cultural tapestry of our state.
“Polka music and dance capture the culture and history of the Czech, German and Polish immigrants who came to Texas. Polka music not only fills Texas music halls across the state but it is also a standard at many festivals and gatherings. The music provides fun entertainment and exercise for those of all ages to enjoy.
To celebrate the magic of polka music, performers and enthusiasts have designated the month of January as Polka Music Month in Texas. Polka music is alive in our state and we must maintain and preserve this valuable Texas tradition.
At this time I encourage Texans to explore the wonderful world of polka and to recognize its many contributions and influence to our state. Whether it is listening to polka music or signing up for a polka dance class, all Texans can participate in keeping the enduring legacy of being a state proud of its cultural diversity and heritage.
Therefore, I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim January 2008 “Polka Music Month in Texas.”
