Bravo, April Dvorak: Way to go, girl!
There’s so much that’s special about the youth of Ennis.
When we hear derogatory remarks about kids, we almost never associate them with our students. And for good reason. There is a sense of responsibility, of pride and success that so many local youngsters not only emanate but propagate. They aren’t afraid to step up and speak out.
Witness the latest example of an Ennis student’s talent and concern for tradition and community –– April Dvorak’s winning entry in SPJST’s Flag Day Essay Contest.
Though only 7 years old, April wrote a piece of clarity and courage those of us many years her senior couldn’t have produced.
Here’s a little of what she wrote about being a “Patriotic Texan,” the competition’s theme:
“I am a patriotic Texan by flying the U.S.A. flag in front of my house on Flag Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, and Veteran’s Day. I fly the U.S.A. flag to show thanks to my Paw-Paw and Grandpa who were both in the Army. I fly my flag because I love my country, and I love Texas.”
No wordsmith could have defined “Patriotic Texan” better than April’s assessment.
Bravo, April –– and congratulations to her as well as to her proud parents, Danny and Jennifer Dvorak!
