Have a say in airport expansion

Ennis’ plans to build a replacement airport are still moving forward and it’s important for local citizens to let their voices be heard during this process.
Feasibility and site selection studies have already been completed and the next step will be completing a master plan and an environmental assessment.
We have said before that a new airport would have important economic development benefits for our community. As Ennis grows, so does our need for a more modern and up-to-date airport that can be expanded in the future. The current airport simply won’t be able to meet those needs.
Because of its geographic location it just isn’t possible to convert the current airport into a facility that will be able to serve this community in the future. It’s very important to have a safe and convenient airport to help recruit new and larger companies to locate in Ennis. The replacement airport should meet those needs and it can be built without increasing local taxes.
We understand, however, that the location of the airport could be a concern for some landowners and residents near the area under consideration. It’s important that they take advantage of the opportunities afforded them to make their concerns known and to have their questions answered.
As proposed, the new airport will be located near the Texas Motorplex, west of the current airport and north of Hwy. 287.
We believe the site selected was the best of the available options, but that does not mean it is perfect. We’re confident that planners will listen to and take into consideration any concerns expressed by neighboring landowners.
We encourage our readers to let airport planners know how they feel about the proposed airport and to continue attending public hearings like the one held Tuesday at the Ennis Public Library. There is no reason for anyone to feel they haven’t had the opportunity to express their opinions and have any of their questions answered. It’s important to have an open discussion.
