Parents should decide discipline

The issue of corporal punishment in schools is controversial and there are strong opinions on both sides of the argument. We suspect the article on today’s front page will raise some eyebrows.
Many may be surprised to learn corporal punishment is allowed in public schools. After all, many of us have heard that teachers and school staff across the nation aren’t allowed to even hug children any more, or touch them in any way for fear of lawsuits or allegations of impropriety.
So how is it that spankings can be allowed? To put it simply, because parents have the right to determine the best way to discipline their own children and if they see corporal punishment as an option the school district can carry it out. The important thing to remember is that the parent must first give permission.
No single method of discipline works for every child. Each child and each situation is different. When deciding how to discipline a child, a parent must consider the child’s age, temperament and the circumstances surrounding the bad behavior.
If a parent doesn’t believe in corporal punishment, they have the right to make sure their wishes are followed at school as well. The same holds true for parents who do use spankings to discipline their children.
Whether or not to spank a child isn’t the choice of Human Rights Watch or the ACLU. It’s a decision for parents to make and we hope that doesn’t change any time soon.
