Commissioners made right decision

The Ellis County Commissioners’ Court showed a willingness to listen to constituents and consider the big picture when they decided yesterday to rescind a previously approved contract for ambulance services.
The contract commissioners approved earlier this month would have stationed two ground ambulances in Italy and Palmer to cover all the rural areas of the county with backup provided by air ambulances. The move would have provided a significant cost savings for the county, but it left many first-responders and citizens concerned about response time and the safety of rural residents.
For instance, air ambulances aren’t always available and two ambulances to cover the entire county would seem to stretch resources pretty thin.
Enough questions were asked and issues were raised to result in having the contract put back on the agenda at last night’s meeting, where it was ultimately canceled. It’s not often elected officials take such a drastic step back, but we think it’s a positive sign.
We think the commissioners made the right decision with this vote and we would like to thank all of the citizens, including area firefighters, who spoke up with their concerns and sought to have the decision reconsidered. Their vigilance and willingness to pursue the issue benefitted all of the residents of this county and we appreciate their efforts.
We would also like to thank Precinct 2 Commissioner Bill Dodson who was the only commissioner to vote against the original contract. At the time, he said he wasn’t necessarily opposed to the agreement, but felt there were many questions left unanswered. That got the ball rolling and led to what we think is a better deal for the safety of county residents.
