Political interest at an all-time high?

Half of the stories on today’s front page reference trips to our nation’s capital. One is about Ennis City Commissioner Lola Searcy’s recent jaunt to Washington D.C. for the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
The second is about the upcoming trip for the Ennis Junior High School Junior Historians, who are being helped along by Ennis Honor Flight. It is a joy to see so much interest lately in the central location of our country’s government.
Tuesday was a historic day for America. So much has already been stated about what a dream come true it is for Obama to have been elected to our nation’s highest position of power, but it seems that because of this epic moment in our history the interest in Washington D.C. and our government has been on the rise in recent months.
Obviously the actions of the previous administration and the current status of our economy plays some part in why all eyes are on Obama and others in Washington, but it seems interest in politics and national government is at an all time high. It’s not just among adults either.
Students at schools in Ennis have also been keeping their eye on the pulse of the nation’s government, which is probably more the result of their teachers forcing them to keep tabs on politics. During the election, students watched as votes were counted and speeches delivered. Students at Austin Elementary School were able to view a part of the inauguration on Tuesday (which you can find out more about in Sunday’s edition of the Ennis Daily News.)
We are happy to see such a great interest being taken in our government. Hopefully this momentum our country has right now will last for years to come and not fade like some fad.
