Offering our thanks to soldiers of war

On today’s front page we learned of a wonderful opportunity for the community to share in something simple that will mean a lot to the soldiers who have been hospitalized after service to their nation.
The ladies auxiliary of the Jack Lummus Memorial VFW Post will be collecting Valentine’s Day cards to share with the soldiers at the VA Hospital in Dallas and are hoping for some support from the community. This is a great program that is not only a way to teach children about giving back and being thankful for the freedoms they have, but it is a small and meaningful way for them to show their appreciation to someone else. That is not to say adults can’t get in on the fun. Homemade cards are nice, but hand-written store-bought cards are just as meaningful to receive.
As mentioned in the article, it doesn’t have to be a grand gesture of gratitude to these soldiers, just a well meaning and sincere thank you for their efforts and for their recovery. With the situations they faced while fighting for our country, a simple card and a Valentine’s Day wish may not seem like a lot, but to those that do not have family nearby or someone to visit, it means a great deal.
We encourage everyone in the community to get on board with the Valentine’s Day program and bring their cards to the Ennis Daily News office by Feb. 9 and brighten the day of a soldier. Despite the slow economy, this is one donation that can be given that doesn’t cost a lot but has a tremendous reward. We hope everyone takes a moment to share their thoughts of gratitude and best wishes with a group that needs to know they are not forgotten.
