Motley indicted on theft charge
Former Ennis Daily News office manager Peggy Motley, 63, was indicted by an Ellis County grand jury Feb. 18 on a charge of theft over $100,000, under $200,000.
If convicted of the second-degree felony, Motley could face a sentence of 2 to 20 years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
Motley is accused of stealing an undisclosed amount of money from the Ennis Daily News where she worked for over 20 years. After being notified that a warrant had been issued for her arrest, she turned herself into Ennis police on Dec. 2 last year. She was transported to Wayne McCollum Detention Center, booked-in and released on a $10,000 bond.
The charges stem from shortages discovered in the company’s financial records during a routine audit. Although the exact amount Motley is accused of stealing has not been released, the company looked at financial records going back several years and uncovered evidence of theft throughout that time.
An Ennis Daily News employee first contacted police on Nov. 26. After the complainant gave a statement and provided evidence, Ennis Police Det. Lt. Ron Roark obtained a warrant for Motley’s arrest on Dec. 1.
