Burn ban a serious issue

While the men on the Ellis County Commissioners’ Court is questioning one another about whether to lift the burn ban currently in effect throughout the county, residents should keep in mind it is still illegal to burn trash and other debris that isn’t for agricultural purposes.
It is perfectly understandable that burning a pile of stuff is a lot easier than loading it in a truck and hauling it off to the dump, but with weather conditions the way they are currently, it is better to be safe than sorry.
Running the fire reports alongside the police reports on page two of this publication, you might notice a vast difference in the amount of calls each department responds to. While the police department has much more action during a day’s patrol, one call for the fire department is a much longer process to clear. A police officer can get through a traffic stop or some criminal mischief report in as few as five to ten minutes, but a gas leak report can take the fire department much longer to clear due to getting the men in their gear, trucks out of the firehouse, checking the scene thoroughly to be sure everything is okay and then heading back to the fire department and parking the tuck back in its place. A single call like this can take as long as an hour, and with only two stations in town, it is important to make sure that we as a community don’t initiate a call that isn’t necessary because we wanted to burn some trash to save ourselves time and effort.
For safety’s sake, wait to burn your stuff until the county commissioners decide when it is safe to do so.
