Criticism was unfounded

Being in the newspaper business, we come across people of all kinds. Because we meet and speak with so many different types of people, we also deal with all sorts of emotions.
Sometimes we are telling stories of sadness like when a family’s house burns down and they lose all of their belongings. At other times we get nice feature stories that are cute and fun to work on. Several instances involve stories about fund-raisers or similar events that have people so excited about raising money for a good cause.
However, it’s inevitable that we also must deal with anger and frustration at times. Such was the case Thursday night when Ennis Daily News staff attended a meeting between Coffman Associates and the citizens of Ennis regarding a replacement airport.
It’s no secret that some residents are angry about the idea of a replacement airport. Whatever your stance is on the need for a new airport, we hope you won’t take out any frustrations on our staff members for covering the story.
Our reporter was verbally accosted at the meeting by a woman who was upset about the land acquisition for the airport. The woman went so far as to yell that the reporter was simply a pawn being manipulated by the city.
We welcome input about our coverage of local events. Our staff is available to speak with readers at any time and we also encourage letters to the editor. However, it’s not productive to verbally attack a reporter at a public meeting. Speaking one-on-one is a better way to get answers and address concerns.
We seek fairness and accuracy in our reporting and we’re not afraid of criticism, but it’s best to do so in a constructive way.
